How do I vacuum my Above Ground Pool?

Forgot to vacuum your pool? For those of you that manually vacuum the pool, this might be something you avoid doing because you’re not sure how to set it up. There are many benefits to vacuuming your pool regularly. If you own an above ground pool, use the following steps to get started with vacuuming:

  1. ATTACH the equipment. Start by attaching your vacuum head to the vacuum pole. Attach the swivel end of your hose to the vacuum head, and make sure your hose has been inspected and there are no kinks, cracks, or holes in the hose.
  2. While standing near the skimmer, place the vacuum head and vacuum hose in the water.
  3. Take the free end of the vacuum hose, hold it directly over the return (the return is where the water is “returning” to the pool) and allow water to fill the vacuum hose. his forces all the air out of the hose. You’ll know when the hose is full of water when air bubbles are no longer coming from the vacuum head.
  4. Insert the vacuum hose onto the skim vacuum or a vacuum adapter. (This will vary dependent on the brand of skimmer you use for your pool.) A skim vacuum is usually a plastic piece that your vacuum hose connects to that is placed over top of your skimmer basket to create suction. If your skimmer has a vacuum port, you will need to connect to a vacuum adapter. Most skimmers with a vacuum port use their own lid to create suction, by placing the lid directly on top of the skimmer basket.
It is recommended that you vacuum your pool once a week, however every back yard is unique, and some pools may need vacuumed more often, or less often. Being proactive and on top of your pool maintenance will give you the joy and satisfaction pool ownership provides.
